ATHENS — The Georgia offense has taken its lumps the last few games. After starting the season with 182 points in its first four games, Georgia has managed 16 points and one touchdown in its last five quarters of action.
Despite the lackluster run of late, Georgia head coach Mark Richt remains confident in first-year offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
“I think coach Schottenheimer is a great coach,” Richt said. “He knows what he’s doing. I think he knows how to coach QBs extremely well. I’ve got a lot of faith in that. We’ve had some ups and downs, but the season’s not over yet.”
Still, the numbers aren’t pretty. Through seven games, Georgia ranks 77th in passing offense, 92nd in red zone offense and is tied for 108th in third-down conversions. The passing game as a whole has been in a flux, with starting quarterback Greyson Lambert and his receivers being unable to play consistently at the same time. What’s resulted is an undesirable situation further complicated by the loss of sophomore running back Nick Chubb.
Part of why Richt isn’t discouraged is how much he’s been able to watch Schottenheimer work. Richt has stood alongside his coordinator a lot each week, allowing the head coach to see the game plan being implemented. With 31 years of experience in the college ranks, Richt knows good coaching from bad coaching. He said he approves of what he’s witnessed.
“I’m in that room most of the time,” Richt said. “I listen to what’s being taught and what’s being coached and how it’s being coached. I’ve got full faith and confidence that he’s doing an outstanding job. We’ve just got to continue to get better as we go and I think we will.”
