Georgia running back Sony Michel debuted a cast on his right hand in the Bulldogs’ win over Kentucky on Nov. 7. According to his head coach, it’s an accessory the sophomore running back will continue to wear for the foreseeable future.

“I think the cast will get modified over time,” Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. “You have to have a really hard shell in the beginning until it heals down enough. We x-ray every so often just to see how the healing is going. Somewhere along the line, it’ll be a little less and a little less and then nothing.”

Richt then decided to share an anatomy lesson on Michel’s injury.

“One of the bones, the metacarpal, is that right?” Richt asked. “Metatarsal is in your foot, if you didn’t know that. But anyway, [the metacarpal] is the bone. It had a little bit of a diagonal crack to it. Sometimes, they’ll shift on you when they have that diagonal crack. This one, thankfully, didn’t shift.”

Michel fractured a bone in his hand on the first play of Georgia’s loss to Florida on Oct. 31. He told the media in the week leading up to the game against the Wildcats that he would have no limitations. He displayed no issues with the cast, as he ran for 165 yards and scored one touchdown in the Bulldogs’ 27-3 victory.

Richt did not give a timetable for when the layers would be peeled off Michel’s cast. He did, however, say progress has been made. It will just take more time to fully recover.

“Usually, when you talk about bones, you talk about 4-6 weeks of healing time,” Richt said. “It’s getting better and stronger but it’s not quite ready for just the padding. It’s got to be a hard cast.”
