UGA quarterbacks fall flat in blowout loss

ATHENS — There was bad news and worse news for Georgia quarterbacks on Saturday. The bad news was between starter Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey, there was only one touchdown through the air. The worse news was that touchdown was a pick six made by Alabama defensive back Eddie Jackson.

Georgia struggled mightily in its passing game in the team’s 38-10 loss to Alabama. The two quarterbacks ended the game with 11 completions on 30 attempts along with three interceptions and a lost fumble. It turned what had been a settled quarterback situation into an uncertain mess.

A major issue that Lambert saw came from the Alabama secondary. Although there was hope the Bulldogs’ stout running game would cause the Crimson Tide to load the box and make throwing the ball easier, the defense never showed any weaknesses defending passes. It shows in the final stats, as Alabama allowed only 106 passing yards.

“A lot of the times, [the issue] was the coverage,” Lambert said. “They covered our guys, so we had to leave the pocket or it just wasn’t there. Our offensive line did a great job. Things just weren’t there in the back end.”

Georgia’s inability to ignite its run game was also a problem. As the Crimson Tide piled on the points, the Bulldogs’ running backs struggled for yards, outside of an 83-yard score by Nick Chubb once the game was already out of hand. With no threat of several big runs by Chubb or Sony Michel, Georgia forced itself to throw despite the inaccuracies. It turned out to be a losing battle.

The rainy conditions in Athens compounded problems. Twice, Lambert dropped the ball on attempts, causing the junior to quickly dive on the ball in order to prevent turnovers. While he shook off the weather since Alabama’s Jake Coker dealt with the same conditions, it’s evident that it only made the task harder.

From here, it’s unclear what Georgia opts to do at quarterback. Despite Lambert’s struggles, it was just two weeks ago that he set the NCAA record for completion percentage. He also started this game with decent numbers, completing four passes on six attempts in the first half.

It seems unlikely Ramsey unseats Lambert, but it did happen for a while on Saturday. Georgia head coach Mark Richtexplained that it was done to try and “create a spark” on offense, which ultimately did not happen. Despite it’s failure on Saturday, it’s entirely possible the coaching staff tries the same thing next week in Knoxville.

Richt said it will be decided in the film room.

“We’re just trying to find some answers,” Richt said. “We’ll watch tape and see exactly what happened. We’ve got to learn to grow from these things.”
